A physician is an individual who has completed a bachelor degree in college followed by education at a formal medical school typically four years in length. This is followed by postgraduate training of at least one year up to seven or eight years depending on the specialty involved. A physician is trained in the medical and sometimes surgical management of abnormalities or conditions. The physician provides direction for the overall treatment plan of a patient when additional non-physician providers are involved.
